Our Conductor and Music Director
Joel Stobbe
Joel Stobbe is a conductor, cellist, educator, and musical leader in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley. He serves as the newly appointed Music Director of the Fraser Valley Symphony and is deeply involved in music education and performance throughout the region.
Joel teaches cello at Langley Community Music School, where he also serves as Senior Program Coordinator and conducts the school’s Senior Orchestra. Through his work at the school, he is closely involved in developing young musicians, providing opportunities to grow through challenging repertoire, ensemble performance, and mentorship.
Joel is also the Artistic Director of the Surrey Youth Orchestra, where he conducts its senior orchestra. Since 2019, he has served as a sessional cello instructor at Trinity Western University. His experience as a performer and educator has shaped his approach to conducting, with a particular emphasis on ensemble development, musical communication, and bringing out the artistic potential of individual musicians.
As a conductor, Joel strives to create performances that are both musically compelling and meaningful for performers and audiences. He believes that great orchestral music has the power to bring people together and create a shared experience that extends beyond the concert hall.
Through his leadership with the Fraser Valley Symphony and his work with musicians of all ages, Joel is passionate about collaborating with the talented musical community of the Fraser Valley and contributing to the region’s vibrant musical life.
Outside of music, Joel enjoys a lifelong hobby of automotive restoration. He has also developed a growing interest in aviation, a passion he currently enjoys living vicariously through his 15 year old son as he explores the world of flying.
